Are you an emerging artist seeking support with applications for commissions, grants, or open calls, but find it challenging to communicate your ideas effectively?

This practical workshop is designed to demystify the process of writing compelling proposals and responding to briefs for creative projects—from crafting artist statements to developing clear, engaging project outlines. Led by experienced artist and creative producer Sam Francis, the session will help you articulate your artistic vision with confidence and adapt your writing for different audiences, contexts, and opportunities. You’ll gain valuable insight into what commissioners look for, review successful examples, and receive constructive feedback.

For the past 15 years, Sam has worked as a freelance creative producer, programmer and curator, developing and supporting interdisciplinary projects across visual art, sound, music, film, performance, and participation. She has developed her own projects, collaborated with artists and groups, and delivered work in galleries, festivals, public spaces, site-specific contexts, and residencies. Rooted in artist-led and experimental practices, her work explores collaboration between people, place, and art forms. Lately, she has focused on environmental, place-based projects often working with communities. Sam is an active member of artist-led collective Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF), a member of Braziers Park School of Social Integrative Research, member of the Advisory Board for Supernormal. She has an MA in Curating from Bristol UWE, and a BA in Fine Art Photography, from University of Gloucestershire. She also provides mentoring, workshops, bid writing, project development support, and am an ACE access support worker for grant applications.

Whether you’re applying for public art commissions, exhibitions, or funding, this online workshop will give you the tools to write with clarity, authenticity, and impact. Sign up below, and a link for the event will be sent after you RSVP.

For creatives from all disciplines aged 16 – 30.
